How to clean cards before grading — without lowering the grade
Cleaning can remove dust and fingerprints that mask true condition, but the wrong method scratches gloss or warps stock. Here is the safe way to prep a card — then pre-grade it to see the real score before you submit.
The safe cleaning steps

Wash and dry your hands
Oils and sweat transfer straight to the surface and show up as smudges or gloss loss under a scanner. Wash with soap, dry fully, and handle cards by the edges only.

Inspect under angled light
Tilt the card under a lamp to reveal print lines, indentations and scratches before you touch it. Note what is a defect vs. what is removable — you cannot grade away a print line.

Remove light dust and debris
Use a clean microfiber cloth or a camera-lens puffer to lift dust. Wipe gently in one direction. Never use paper towels, which can micro-scratch the gloss.

Skip the liquids on vintage stock
Cardboard and vintage stock absorb moisture and can warp or stain. For modern glossy cards, a barely-damp microfiber with distilled water can lift a fingerprint — but when in doubt, leave it dry.

Check corners and edges last
Whitening on corners and edges is physical wear, not dirt — cleaning will not raise the grade. Knowing this before you submit sets realistic expectations.
What never to use
