A card grading app does not grade your card — it predicts how a grader is likely to score it, from photos, in seconds. Used well, that prediction is the cheapest decision you can make in this hobby: it stops you paying submission fees on cards that were never going to come back a 9 or 10. Here is what separates a useful pre-grading app from a novelty.
What an app can and cannot see
From a good photo, AI can measure border ratios for centering, inspect corners at high magnification, detect edge whitening and chipping, and pick up print lines, scratches, dimples and glare on the surface. Those four areas are exactly what human graders score.
What it cannot do is authenticate a card, detect a trimmed edge with certainty, or see a flaw your photo did not capture. That is why the output is a pre-grade estimate — a screening tool, not a certified or official grade. Any app claiming otherwise is selling you something.
